Don Carlos Cuarteron (1816–1880) was a Spanish sea captain who later became a Catholic priest and missionary. Monsignor Don Carlos Cuarteron was the first Apostolic Prefect of Labuan and Borneo. Appointed by Pope Pius IX in 1855, he pioneered the establishment of the Catholic Church in Northern Borneo, laying the foundations for the Church’s growth in present-day Sabah, Labuan, and Brunei. 

Key Highlights

Born: 19 September 1816 in Cádiz, Spain.
Began his career as a sailor and became a ship captain before the age of 25.
Moved by the plight of slavery and human suffering in Southeast Asia, he dedicated his life to God.
Ordained a Catholic priest in 1854.
Appointed the First Apostolic Prefect of Labuan and Borneo in 1855.
Arrived in Labuan in 1857 to establish the Catholic mission in Northern Borneo.
Founded the first Catholic mission stations in Labuan, Brunei, and near present-day Kota Kinabalu.
Worked tirelessly to evangelize local communities, redeem slaves, promote education, and provide pastoral care despite significant hardships.
Invested much of his personal fortune to support missionary work.
Faced isolation, limited resources, political challenges, and the withdrawal of fellow missionaries, yet remained steadfast in his mission.
Resigned due to ill health in 1879 and passed away in Spain on 12 March 1880. 

Legacy

Don Carlos Cuarteron is remembered as the pioneer of the Catholic Church in Sabah and Labuan. Despite numerous challenges, his dedication laid the groundwork for the Church’s subsequent growth through the Mill Hill Missionaries and future generations of clergy and faithful. Today, he is honored as one of the most significant figures in the history of Christianity in Borneo.

The Fourteen Pilgrimage Churches of St. Michael’s Parish, Penampang

Tracing the Legacy of Early Missionaries

The Catholic faith in Penampang was established in 1886 by Fr. Alexander Prenger, MHM, who founded the first mission at Inobong. His dedication and missionary zeal laid the groundwork for what would become the Penampang Mission, earning him recognition as its founder.

In 1906, Rev. Fr. August Wachter, MHM, arrived in Penampang as an assistant missionary. A talented educator, builder, and evangelist, he founded schools, expanded mission stations, and fostered the spiritual development of the Kadazan-Dusun Catholic community. Under his stewardship, Penampang emerged as the principal Catholic mission center in North Borneo.

With the establishment of the Prefecture Apostolic of North Borneo by the Holy See in 1927, Fr. August Wachter was appointed its inaugural Prefect Apostolic. From his base in Penampang, he directed the Church’s growth throughout Sabah by inaugurating new missions, enhancing Catholic education, and promoting local vocations.

Recognizing the necessity for a local religious congregation, Msgr. August Wachter founded the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (FSIC) on 16 June 1936, with the support of Mother Rose Charnley. This congregation became the first indigenous religious institute in North Borneo and continues to serve the Church in Malaysia through education, catechesis, pastoral care, and charitable activities.

The magnificent St. Michael’s Church, whose foundation stone was laid on 29 September 1936, stands today as a lasting testament to Msgr. Wachter’s vision and faith. Although construction was interrupted by World War II, the church was completed in 1947 and remains one of Sabah’s most cherished Catholic landmarks.
